Nala’s Story
“The CPCA helped me realize it wasn’t my fault. Now I want to help other kids find the courage to speak up.”
Nala was only nine years old when her stepfather began coming into her room at night.
She loved her mom and three brothers deeply, but fear and shame kept her silent for years. The abuse continued on a regular basis through Nala’s prime development years.
When Nala was 14, she developed a trusting relationship with her brother’s girlfriend.
Nala finally confided in her brother’s girlfriend through text messages, revealing the terrible abuse that was still happening. One evening, Nala’s mom took her phone to check her social media—just a routine safety check. What she saw stopped her cold.
The messages between Nala and her brother’s girlfriend told a heartbreaking story no parent should ever have to read.
Through tears, Nala’s mother immediately called the police and had the stepfather removed. Nala was brought to The Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. The specially trained investigators conducted a compassionate forensic interview, and with the evidence collected, her stepfather confessed and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
